The third psychosocial stage – Initiative versus Guilty, rationalized that children tend to assert themselves in ways which are considered socially acceptable, and learn to take initiative in their dealings with both people and tasks. It was maintained in Erikson’s psychosocial theory of personal development that Will’s defensive and avoidant personality was developed due to the continuing abuse by his foster homes when he was young. Erikson believed that personality develops in a series of stages. The particular theory is one of the best-known theories of personality in psychology. First of all, I would like to adopt the Erikson’s psychosocial theory of personal development (Neu-Freudian theory) as a direction of explaining Will’s personality in the movie.
